Ph.D Programme

IISER Thiruvananthapuram has a vibrant Ph.D Programme in the area of Physical Sciences and Interdisciplinary areas.

The School of Physics admitted the first batch of doctoral students in August, 2009. From then onwards, Ph.D Students were admitted twice each academic year at the beginning of Varsha(August - December) and Vasanth(January - May) semesters. All the students admitted have cleared one of the following national examinations: CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, JEST. The School now has 28 students, out of which 14 of these students avail fellowships from UGC/CSIR and other students receive fellowship from IISER-TVM.


Including the course work, the duration of the Ph.D Programme is approximately 10 semesters.

Rs. 16,000/- pm for the first two years and Rs.18,000/- pm from third year onwards (subject to clearing comprehensive examination).

Doctoral Committee

  • Each student is assigned a supervisor and doctoral committee (consisting of the supervisor and two other members of the IISER faculty) is appointed. 
  • The doctoral committee monitors the semester-wise assessment of the progress of the research work of the scholar and will approve the synopsis of the Ph.D thesis before submission.
Course work and Comprehensive Examination
  • Within the first two years of enrolling, as prescribed by the doctoral committee, students must credit a minimum of four (300 level or higher) courses.
  • The CGPA of the completed courses must not be below 7. 
  • On successful completion of the course work, the scholar must take a comprehensive examination in the area of proposed research work.

Teaching Assistantship

A key feature of the Ph.D Programme at IISER-TVM is that students take part in teaching assistant duties as assigned by the respective school.

All Ph.D students must give atleast two seminars related to the work carried out in the 3rd and 4th year.


Applicants must satisfy the following criteria

  1. Master’s degree in Physical Sciences, Materials Science, Engineering or Technology, in areas closely related to the interests of the physics faculty at IISER TVM. 60% marks or equivalent is desirable.
  2. Qualifying in one of the following national level examination with validity as on 1st January 2015: GATE#/CSIR-UGC-JRF/JEST-2014/INSPIRE Ph.D. Fellowship.

  2. Applicants will also be prompted to upload all the supporting documents, like photograph, signature, community certificate and national level examination (CSIR/NBHM/Inspire etc) online.
  3. Applicants should provide Name/Affiliation/Contact number and Email address of two referees in the application form.
  4. Applicants should download the Referee Report Form here and forward them to the concerned referees. The completed reports should be obtained in sealed envelopes and be submitted by the candidates, directly while attending the selection interviews.
  5. GE/OBC [SC/ST/PH] applicants are required to make a payment of Rs. 200/- [Rs. 100/-] as processing fee through the Powerjyoti Account.
  6. On submission of the online application form, the applicants will receive an acknowledgment email with a unique application number.
  7. Applicants are NOT required to post hard copy of the application to IISER-TVM.
